The rolling countryside of the Lomagne is a spectacle in itself,
its colours changing with the time of day, the weather and the seasons.
The nearby town of Lectoure is well worth a visit,
with its narrow streets leading down to the sun,
its archeological museum and its thermal centre.
You can experience your first hot-air balloon flight there, too,
or perhaps you prefer to have your feet on terra firma
at the golf course (nine holes) in Fleurance.
It is said that the Gers county has a thousand castles.
Perhaps the finest, with floors of stone and brick, is in the village of Lavardens.
The abbey at La Romieu and the delicate tracery of its cloisters certainly merit a visit,
as do the Cistercian abbey of Flaran and the fortified village of Larressingle.
And to discover some of the bastide towns for which the Gers is famous,
a discovery tour of Fleurance, Cologne and Mauvezin, amongst others, is highly recommended.
